Three people have died and two remain in critical condition after
consuming durian and distilled spirits in Bungo regency, Jambi, on
Wednesday. Police are investigating whether food poisoning was the
cause.
Jambi Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Yasir said Thursday the hospitalized victims have yet to regain consciousness.
"We are waiting for autopsy results," he said, as quoted by Antara news agency.
The victims, all related, were Suhardi (50), Edi (45), Ijul (30), Wanda
(25) and Aji (25). The latter three were found dead on the scene.
Yasir said the victims were working at a private construction site. They
had bought durian to eat during their lunch break on Tuesday, and
consumed the fruit while drinking distilled liquor which was reported to
carry the brand name of Mensen.
They were found with a foam-like discharge in their mouths by an employee of the company Wednesday morning.
The police have taken the durian remains and the liquor bottle for examination. (dre)
